Phosphatidylcholine Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a purified extract from lecithin and is one of the components of bile. PC emulsifies (binds) and breaks down fat deposits in the body, which make it helpful in the prevention and treatment of gallstones, atherosclerosis, heart disease and liver problems. PC is a phospholipid, a large biological molecule that is a universal building block for cell membranes. Cell membranes regulate the vast majority of the activities that make up life. PC has a marked fluidizing effect on cellular membranes. Decreased cell membrane fluidization and breakdown of cell membrane integrity, as well as impairment of cell membrane repair mechanisms, are associated with a number of disorders, including liver disease, neurological diseases, atherosclerosis, cancer, cell death and many other conditions. Most liver metabolism occurs on cell membranes and more than two decades of clinical trials indicate that phosphatidylcholine protects the liver against damage from alcohol, pharmaceutical drugs, chemicals, viruses and other toxic influences, most of which operate by damaging cell membranes. Several studies reveal that individuals suffering from hepatitis A, B & C treated with PC enjoyed quicker recoveries, fewer relapses and quicker normalization of liver function. Research has shown that phosphatidylcholine is beneficial in depression, memory loss, learning disorders and neurological disorders such as tardive dyskinesia, dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Phosphatidylcholine is truly a miraculous substance and the effectiveness of therapy with PC is reflective of how important it is to restore to the body those materials that it so deperately requires for normal functioning. |
